Ingredients
  

For the cake
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter for the cake
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
For the frosting
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter for frosting
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract for frosting

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a large baking sheet.
  2. In a saucepan, combine the butter and water, bringing to a boil.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Pour the boiling butter mixture over the flour mixture and stir until combined.
  5. Add buttermilk, eggs, vanilla, and almond extract, mixing well.
Baking
  1. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes.
Frosting
  1. For frosting, beat together butter, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
  2. Once the cake has cooled, spread the frosting evenly over the top.
Serving
  1. Cut into squares and serve.

Notes

Can be served with fresh berries, vanilla ice cream, or a dollop of whipped cream. For storage, cover with plastic wrap or keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days, or refrigerate for up to a week.
