Ingredients
  

Beef Filling

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 packet taco seasoning mix or homemade seasoning See homemade seasoning section for details.
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste (optional)
  • to taste Salt and black pepper

Taco Assembly

  • 8 small taco shells or soft tortillas
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a blend)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
  • to taste Sliced jalapeƱos (optional) For extra heat.
  • to taste Salsa or taco sauce

Homemade Taco Seasoning (Optional)

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional) For heat.

Instructions
 

Preparation of Beef Filling

  • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  • Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  • If using taco seasoning, stir in the seasoning mix and water. Cook for 5 minutes. If using homemade seasoning, stir in spices and water, simmer for 5 minutes, and adjust seasoning to your taste.

Assembly

  • For hard taco shells, heat them in the oven as directed on the package. For soft tortillas, warm them in a skillet or microwave.
  • Assemble the tacos by spooning the beef mixture into the shells. Top with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, sour cream, and cilantro.
  • Add salsa or jalapeƱos if you like some extra heat.
  • Serve immediately while shells are crispy.

Notes

Tacos are best served right after assembling them. Place the filled tacos on a platter and let everyone dig in. You can also serve them with extra toppings on the side for customization. If you have any leftover filling, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Taco shells can be kept in their original packaging or in a sealed bag. The filling will stay good for about 3-4 days, but it's best to eat them fresh.
