Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 3-4 lbs beef brisket Choose a well-marbled brisket for best results.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce Your choice of flavor.
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper Adjust to taste.
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Cooking Instructions

  • Start by trimming excess fat from the brisket, ensuring you leave some for flavor.
  • In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium-high heat.
  • Add the brisket to the pan and sear on both sides until browned (about 3-4 minutes per side).
  • Remove the brisket, and in the same pan, add sliced onions and minced garlic. Sauté until softened (about 5 minutes).
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together beef broth, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, chili powder, cayenne pepper, black pepper, and salt until smooth.
  • Place the brisket back into the skillet, then pour the sauce mixture over it, ensuring it’s well-coated.
  • Cover and cook on low heat on the stovetop for 4-6 hours, or transfer everything to a slow cooker and set on low heat for the same time.
  • Verify that the brisket is tender. You can shred it easily with two forks when done.
  • Let the brisket rest for at least 30 minutes before shredding to allow the juices to redistribute.
  • Once rested, use two forks to shred the brisket, mixing well with the sauce for an even coating.

Notes
