Preparation
- Mix all chai spices in a jar and shake well. Store until needed.
- Combine dough ingredients in a stand mixer; knead on low for 8-10 minutes until soft.
- Place in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 8-10 hours.
- Mix sugar and chai spice blend. Melt vegan butter.
- Divide dough into 4 parts, roll into rounds, and layer with butter and the sugar-spice mix.
- Cut into strips and twist to form a star.
- Proof for 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 400°F (204°C) and bake for 20 minutes, then lower to 350°F (177°C) and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
- Cool and optionally dust with confectioner's sugar before serving.
Notes
For optimal freshness, store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. Can be frozen for up to three months. Ensure kitchen is warm for the sourdough to rise properly. Customize with different spices or additions.
