  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar Can adjust based on preference
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice Or substitute with lime juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
  • 1 whole bay leaf Remove before serving
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 cup filtered water

Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients.
  • In a medium pot, combine the crushed tomato puree, sea salt, granulated sugar, and filtered water.
  • Add the crushed basil, red pepper flakes, dried oregano leaves, black pepper, fresh lemon juice, onion powder, dried thyme leaves, smoked paprika, and the bay leaf.
  • Stir the mixture well to incorporate all the flavors evenly.
  • Over medium heat, bring your sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove the whole bay leaf before serving.
  • Taste and adjust the seasonings if needed.

Notes

For better flavor, use fresh herbs. This sauce can be stored in the fridge for up to a week or frozen for longer storage. Consider adding a splash of red wine during simmering for added depth.
