Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 lb Ground Beef The foundation of the Patty Melt, bringing savory flavor and juiciness.
  • 4 slices Cheese (American or Swiss) Melts perfectly over the patty, adding creaminess.
  • 4 slices Bread Choose thick, hearty bread like rye or sourdough for the best toasty texture.
  • 1 large Onions Sweet, caramelized onions add a beautiful contrast to the rich beef and cheese.
  • 2 tbsp Butter Used for grilling the bread and achieving a crispy, golden finish.
  • Salt and Black Pepper To taste; essential seasonings to bring out the flavors of the beef and onions.
  • 4 slices Pickles (optional) For an extra crunch and tang to balance the richness of the melt.

Method

Preparation
  1. Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat for the best crispy finish.
  2. Form the ground beef into 4 equal patties and season with salt and pepper.
  3. Slice the onion thinly and set aside.
  4. Butter one side of each slice of bread.
Cooking
  1. In the hot skillet, cook the beef patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until cooked to your desired level.
  2. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add a little more butter if needed, then place the buttered bread slices in the skillet, butter side down.
  4. Top each slice with cheese, then add a beef patty and some caramelized onions.
  5. Close the sandwich with the second slice of bread.
  6. Grill the sandwich on both sides until the bread is golden and crispy, and the cheese is melted inside.
  7. Slice the sandwich in half and serve with pickles on the side for extra crunch.

Notes

These toasties are best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, place them in a skillet over low heat or pop them in a toaster oven. If freezing, wrap each toastie tightly and place in an airtight container; they'll keep for up to a month.
