Preparation
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin slices.
- In a large bowl, combine the apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), flour, and lemon juice. Toss to coat the apples evenly.
- Transfer the apple mixture to a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
Topping Preparation
- In another bowl, mix together the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
- Add the cold butter cubes to the oat mixture. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, blend the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
Baking
- Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple filling.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly and tender.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
Old Fashioned Apple Crisp can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) until warmed through, about 20 minutes. Freezes well for up to three months.
