Ingredients

Apples and Flavoring
  • 6-7 medium medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional) Optional for added flavor
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice Brightens the flavor and helps prevent browning
Topping
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold and cut into small cubes) Must be cold for proper texture

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin slices.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), flour, and lemon juice. Toss to coat the apples evenly.
  4. Transfer the apple mixture to a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
Topping Preparation
  1. In another bowl, mix together the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. Add the cold butter cubes to the oat mixture. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, blend the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
Baking
  1. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple filling.
  2. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly and tender.
  3. Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
