Ingredients
  

For the Beef Mixture

  • 1 lb ground beef Lean ground beef is recommended.
  • 1 tbsp olive oil For sautéing.
  • 1 small red onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • to taste Salt & pepper

For Serving

  • 4 pita or flatbreads, warmed
  • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt or tzatziki sauce For spreading.
  • 1/2 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup chopped cucumber
  • 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • to taste Fresh parsley or dill For garnish.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add onions and garlic, sautéing until fragrant and soft, about 3 minutes.
  • Add ground beef, breaking it apart with a spoon, and cook until browned and fully cooked, about 7–8 minutes.
  • Stir in cumin, oregano, paprika, salt, and pepper, then simmer for another minute to allow the spices to infuse.

Assembly

  • Warm the pita or flatbreads and spread a generous spoonful of tzatziki or Greek yogurt over each.
  • Add the seasoned beef mixture, then top with tomatoes, cucumber, and feta.
  • Garnish with parsley or dill and serve immediately.

Notes

If you have any leftovers, store the beef mixture and toppings separately in the fridge for up to 3 days. The gyros can also be frozen for up to 3 months, storing the pita separately to maintain freshness. Customization options include using ground lamb, turkey, lentils, or mushrooms as alternatives.
