Ingredients

For the sauce

  • 3/4 cup water for sauce
  • 4 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce for a healthier option
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch for thickening
  • 1/4 cup water for slurry

Instructions

Preparation

  • Combine the 3/4 cup water, brown sugar, soy sauce, garlic powder, and ground ginger in a medium saucepan over low to medium heat.
  • In a small bowl, combine the cornstarch with the 1/4 cup water and whisk until dissolved.
  • Add the cornstarch mixture to the saucepan.
  • Heat the sauce until it thickens to your desired consistency, adding more water if you want it thinner.

Notes

Store any leftover sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week. For longer storage, freeze in ice cube trays for up to three months. Adjust sweetness with brown sugar and consider variations by adding sriracha for spice or citrus for brightness.
