  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 ounces) whole peeled tomatoes
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish

Cooking

  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  • Add minced garlic and sauté for another minute until fragrant.
  • Pour in the canned tomatoes with their juice. Use a spoon to break them up.
  • Stir in oregano, sugar, salt, and pepper. Let the sauce simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  • Serve the marinara sauce with pasta or your choice of dish, garnished with fresh basil leaves.

Notes

You can customize this marinara sauce by using fresh tomatoes instead of canned, or by adding ground meat or vegetables for variation. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to a week or freeze for up to three months.
