Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes, canned
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, sugar, oregano, and basil.
  • Season with salt and pepper.
  • Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens.
  • Adjust seasoning if needed.
  • Serve with pasta, pizza, or as desired, garnished with fresh basil.

Notes

Feel free to adjust spices according to your taste. You can add crushed red pepper flakes for heat, or use fresh tomatoes (about 2-3 pounds, peeled and chopped) for a fresher flavor. A splash of red wine can enhance the flavor too. To store, let it cool, then transfer to an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
