  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Make sure your butter is softened for easier mixing.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons milk (optional) Mix in if the dough is too thick.
  • Sprinkles or colored sugar for decoration Use different colors for special occasions.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the salt, vanilla extract, and egg until well combined.
  • Gradually add the flour and mix until the dough comes together. If the dough is too thick, mix in milk a tablespoon at a time.
  • Using a cookie press or piping bag, shape the dough onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper.
  • Decorate with sprinkles or colored sugar if desired.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
  • Allow to cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

German Spritz Cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week or frozen for longer storage. You can customize the flavors with almond extract or lemon zest, and variations with chocolate chips or nuts are also delightful.
