  • 4 medium green tomatoes, sliced Choose firm green tomatoes for the best results.
  • 1 cup cornmeal You can experiment by adding spices for extra flavor.
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Mix in some cajun seasoning or paprika for a spicy version.
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying Maintain oil temperature around 350°F for optimal frying.

Preparation

  • Slice the green tomatoes into 1/4 inch thick slices.
  • In three separate bowls, place the flour seasoned with salt and pepper, the buttermilk, and the cornmeal.
  • Dip each tomato slice into the flour, then the buttermilk, and finally coat with cornmeal.

Cooking

  • Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Fry the tomato slices in batches for 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
  • Remove and drain on paper towels. Serve warm.

Notes

To keep your Fried Green Tomatoes fresh, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. For longer storage, freeze for up to three months, layering with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
