Ingredients
  

For the Chicken Fried Steak

  • 4 pieces cube steaks (about 1/2 inch thick)
  • 2 cups buttermilk Marinate steaks in buttermilk for best results.
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour For coating the steaks.
  • to taste salt and pepper For seasoning.
  • as needed oil For frying.

For the Country Gravy

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour For thickening the gravy.
  • 2 cups milk For making the gravy.
  • to taste salt and pepper For seasoning the gravy.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Marinate cube steaks in buttermilk for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best results.
  • In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs and a pinch of salt. In another dish, combine flour, salt, and pepper.
  • Remove steaks from buttermilk and coat in the flour mixture, then dip in egg, and coat again in the flour mixture.

Cooking

  • Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry each steak until golden brown on both sides, about 4-5 minutes per side.
  • Remove steaks and place on paper towels to drain.

Making the Gravy

  • In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in 2 tablespoons of flour until well combined.
  • Gradually add milk, whisking constantly until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Serving

  • Serve the chicken fried steak with country gravy poured on top.

Notes

Pairs beautifully with creamy mashed potatoes and steamed green beans. Consider serving alongside fresh garden salad or cornbread.
