  • 1 pinch Nutmeg, freshly grated Enhances the creamy flavors.

  • to taste Black Pepper, freshly ground Balances the richness of the dish.
  • 2 tablespoons Butter For greasing the baking dish.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish with butter.
  • Peel the Russet potatoes and slice them thinly, about 1/8 inch thick.
  • In a large saucepan, combine the heavy cream, whole milk, minced garlic, and a pinch of nutmeg. Heat gently until just warm, ensuring not to boil.

Layering

  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the greased baking dish. Sprinkle half of the grated Gruyère cheese over the top.
  • Pour half of the warm cream mixture over the cheese and potatoes, then season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  • Repeat the layering process with the remaining potatoes, cheese, and cream mixture, ensuring the top is well covered with cheese.
  • Add the fresh thyme sprigs on top before covering the dish with aluminum foil.

Baking

  • Bake for 45 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  • Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving, letting the flavors settle.

Notes

Creamy Potato Gratin pairs beautifully with oven-roasted meats and can be served alongside a crisp green salad or steamed vegetables. For the crispy top, broil the gratin for the last few minutes of baking. You can also experiment with different cheese options and layer in additional vegetables.
