  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 pieces eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons hot water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional) Use if desired

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until the mixture is smooth.
  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In a small bowl, dissolve the baking soda in hot water. Add this to the batter along with salt.
  • Stir in the flour, chocolate chips, and walnuts if using.
  • Drop large spoonfuls of dough onto ungreased baking pans.

Baking

  • Bake for about 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the edges are nicely browned.

Notes

To keep your cookies fresh, store them in an airtight container at room temperature. They will stay good for about a week. For longer storage, freeze them in a freezer-safe container for up to three months. Thaw at room temperature before enjoying.
