  • 1 lb pizza dough
  • 1/2 lb Italian sausage (casing removed) Substitute with lean turkey or plant-based sausage for a lighter option.
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup marinara sauce Use for a flavorful filling.
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 large egg (beaten) For brushing on top.
  • to taste salt and pepper

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  2. In a skillet, cook the Italian sausage over medium heat until browned and fully cooked. Use a spatula to break it into small pieces, draining any excess grease.
  3. Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface, forming a large rectangle.
  4. Spread the marinara sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a border around the edges.
  5. Sprinkle the cooked sausage on top of the sauce, followed by a generous layer of shredded mozzarella, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  6. Starting from one long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log.
  7. Place the log seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Brush the top of the log with the beaten egg for that golden finish.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbling.
  2. Allow the log to cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

Slice into thick pinwheels and serve with a garden salad or garlic bread. Store leftovers wrapped tightly for up to 3 days in the fridge, or freeze before baking for up to 2 months.
