Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef Use lean ground beef for a healthier option.
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3-4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced Peeled if preferred.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt Or to taste.
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper Or to taste.
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom or chicken soup Both options work well.
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream For creaminess.
  • 1/4 cup cheddar cheese, shredded Plus more for topping, if desired.

Optional Ingredients

  • Paprika For additional flavor.
  • Garlic powder For additional flavor.
  • Dried herbs like parsley or thyme For additional flavor.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • While the oven is heating, wash and slice the potatoes thinly. You can peel them if you prefer a smoother texture.

Cooking

  • In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  • Add the chopped onion and season with salt and pepper. Sauté until the onion is translucent.
  • In a bowl, mix together the cream of mushroom or chicken soup, milk, sour cream, and additional seasonings if desired. Stir well to create a smooth, creamy mixture.

Assembly

  • In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by the beef mixture, and then half of the creamy mixture.
  • Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes and creamy mixture. Top with shredded cheddar cheese.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.

Notes

For extra flavor, experiment with spices and herbs to suit your taste. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days or freeze for longer storage.
