Ingredients

For the garlic bread
  • 1 loaf Italian bread
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
For the sloppy joe filling
  • 1 pound ground beef Can substitute with shredded chicken or plant-based meat for alternatives.
  • 1/4 cup yellow onion, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • Chopped parsley, for garnish

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add chopped onion, garlic powder, yellow mustard, ketchup, kosher salt, black pepper, and water to the skillet. Stir and let simmer for about 10 minutes.
Garlic Bread
  1. While the meat mixture simmers, mix softened butter with garlic salt.
  2. Slice the Italian bread in half lengthwise and spread the garlic butter evenly on both halves.
  3. Place the bread on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes or until golden and crispy.
Assembly
  1. Remove the bread from the oven and spoon the beef mixture onto the toasted bread halves.
  2. Top with shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheese.
  3. Return to the oven and bake until cheese is melted and bubbly, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve warm.

Notes

For added flavor, consider using garlic herb butter instead of plain butter. Experiment with cheese combinations, and for a vegetarian version, substitute ground beef with lentils or chopped mushrooms.
