Ingredients

Dough

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour Whole wheat flour can be used as a substitute.
  • 1/2 cup Granulated sugar Coconut sugar can be used as a substitute.
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons Active dry yeast Instant yeast can be used as a substitute.
  • 1 cup Milk, warmed Almond or oat milk can be used as a substitute.
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted butter, melted Coconut oil can be used for dairy-free.
  • 1 large Egg A flax egg can be used as a vegan substitute.

Filling

  • 8 oz Cream cheese Dairy-free cream cheese can be used as a substitute.
  • 1 cup Blueberries Frozen blueberries can be used (thawed and drained).
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract Almond extract can be used for a nutty flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice No substitute necessary.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • Add in the melted butter, egg, and half of the flour. Stir until just combined. Gradually add the remaining flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead it for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until doubled in size.

Filling

  • While the dough is rising, combine cream cheese, sugar, vanilla extract, and lemon juice in a medium bowl. Mix until smooth and creamy.

Assembly

  • Punch down the dough after it has risen. Roll it out into a rectangle approximately 16×12 inches.
  • Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the rolled-out dough. Sprinkle the blueberries on top, distributing them evenly.
  • Starting from the long side, tightly roll the dough into a log. Slice the log into 12 pieces and place them in a greased baking dish.
  • Cover the rolls with a dish towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for about 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Let cool slightly and drizzle with icing or enjoy plain. Pair with coffee or tea for the ultimate experience!

Notes

Make sure your milk is warm but not hot; it helps activate the yeast without cooking it. If using frozen blueberries, thaw and drain them to avoid excess moisture in your rolls. Wrap individual rolls in a damp paper towel for reheating to keep them moist.
