  • 3 large Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples, peeled and cut into fry-sized strips Use firm apples for the best texture.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • vegetable oil, for frying Make sure it's hot enough before frying.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • optional dipping sauce: caramel or vanilla yogurt Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.

Preparation

  • Heat oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Line a plate with paper towels.
  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually add milk to form a smooth batter.
  • Mix cinnamon and sugar in a bowl and set aside.
  • Pat apple strips dry with paper towels.
  • Dip apples into batter, letting excess drip off.

Cooking

  • Fry in batches for 2–3 minutes until golden, turning once.
  • Remove and drain on paper towels.
  • Toss warm fries in cinnamon sugar until well coated.
  • Serve immediately with dipping sauce of choice.

Notes

To store Apple Fries, place them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, place them in an oven preheated to 350°F (175°C) for about 5 minutes. For freezing, allow to cool completely, then freeze in a single layer before transferring to a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Expert tips: Choose firm apples, do not overcrowd the pan, and keep an eye on the frying time.
