Ingredients

For the Apple Fries

  • 4 large large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp) Choose firm apples for the best texture.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Can substitute with gluten-free flour blend.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sparkling water or club soda
  • Vegetable oil for frying Vegetable oil Ensure it's hot enough before frying.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade) For dipping.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin fry-shaped pieces.
  • In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually pour in the sparkling water while stirring until the batter is smooth.

Cooking

  • Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  • Dip each apple slice into the batter, letting the excess drip off.
  • Carefully place the battered apple slices into the hot oil. Fry in batches, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Remove the apple fries with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  • In a shallow bowl, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon. Toss the warm apple fries in the mixture until well coated.

Serving

  • Serve the apple fries warm with caramel dipping sauce on the side.

Notes

Apple fries are best served warm right after frying. For a fun touch, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top for a dessert treat. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to two days, but are best enjoyed fresh.
