Ingredients

For the oatmeal
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 2 medium apples, any kind peeled and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter for sautéing apples
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup or brown sugar, adjust to taste

Method

Preparation
  1. Peel and core the apples, then chop them into ½-inch pieces.
Cooking
  1. In a medium (3-quart) saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped apples and cinnamon, stirring to combine.
  3. Cook while stirring occasionally until the apples begin to soften, about 4 to 5 minutes.
  4. Pour in the milk, add the rolled oats and a pinch of salt, stirring everything together.
  5. Increase heat and bring the mixture to a boil, watching closely to prevent the milk from boiling over.
  6. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and simmer the oatmeal, stirring occasionally, until the oats are tender and most of the liquid is absorbed, approximately 6 to 8 minutes.
  7. Stir in the maple syrup, then serve the oatmeal warm.

Notes

For a delightful breakfast experience, serve your Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal topped with a sprinkle of nuts or seeds for added crunch, or a dollop of yogurt for creaminess. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days; add a splash of milk when reheating.
