Protein Donuts

Do you love donuts but want to eat healthier? Protein donuts are a fantastic treat that lets you enjoy the sweetness without the guilt. These donuts are not only delicious, but they also pack a protein punch!

Why Make This Recipe

Making protein donuts is a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth while boosting your protein intake. They are perfect for breakfast or a snack and can fit into your healthy eating plan. Plus, they are easy to make at home, and you can customize them to your liking.

How to Make Protein Donuts

Making protein donuts is simple and fun! Just follow these easy steps, and you’ll have a tasty treat in no time.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup (45 g) protein powder (I recommend vegan protein powder or casein, see notes*)
  • ⅔ cup (70 g) oat flour (or preferred flour)
  • ¼ cup (30 g) cocoa powder
  • 1 egg
  • ⅓ cup (80 g) Greek yogurt (minimum 5% fat)
  • ¼ cup (60 g) almond butter (substitute with peanut butter or sunflower seed butter)
  • 3 tbsp (60 ml) maple syrup (or honey)
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • ¼ to ⅓ cup (60 to 80 ml) milk of choice (amount depends on protein powder, see notes*)
  • 3 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup (or honey)
  • 1 tsp coconut oil (melted)
  • ½ to 1 tbsp milk of choice (at room temperature)

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and grease a donut pan with cooking spray or oil.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the egg, then mix it with Greek yogurt, maple syrup, almond butter, and a pinch of salt. Stir well to combine.
  3. Add oat flour, protein powder, cocoa powder, and baking powder to the wet mixture. Gradually pour in the milk while stirring. The amount of milk you need depends on your protein powder. If the batter is too dry, add more milk; if it’s too wet, add more flour. Aim for a smooth, thick batter without lumps.
  4. Pipe the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each mold about ¾ full.
  5. Bake in the hot oven for 10 to 15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow them to cool at room temperature for at least 10 minutes before glazing.

Healthy Chocolate Glaze

  1. In a small bowl, combine 3 tbsp cocoa powder, 2 tbsp maple syrup (or honey), 1 tsp melted coconut oil, and ½ to 1 tbsp milk at room temperature. Mix until smooth.
  2. Dip or drizzle the glaze over the cooled donuts.

How to Serve Protein Donuts

Serve your protein donuts warm or at room temperature. You can enjoy them plain or with a drizzle of the chocolate glaze. Pair them with a glass of milk or your favorite coffee for a perfect breakfast or snack!

How to Store Protein Donuts

Store leftover protein donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. For longer storage, keep them in the fridge for up to a week. You can also freeze them for up to a month; just thaw and enjoy them later!

Tips to Make Protein Donuts

  • Experiment with different protein powders to find your favorite flavor.
  • Use flavored nut butter, like honey-roasted peanut butter, for extra taste.
  • Add in some chocolate chips or nuts for added texture and flavor.
  • Keep an eye on baking time to avoid overbaking.

Variation

Consider adding fruits like mashed bananas or applesauce to the batter for added sweetness and moisture. You can also substitute different flours based on your dietary preferences.
